Originally built in 1810 to service the newly built Kennet & Avon canal, the pub burnt down in the 1850s. Rebuilt in record time it now stands as it did then.
Once known as The George Inn, it served as a bakehouse, slaughter house and shop for those living and working on the canal. The area is steeped in history & Wiltshire legends, from King Arthur and Merlin to crop circles and aliens! In fact The Crop Circle Visitor Centre is within walking distance.
The setting is glorious with views across the canal to the Marlborough Downs and the Alton Barnes White Horse. Plenty of seating outside to absorb the magnificence of the scenery on warm summer days. Situated canalside it is ideal for walkers, visitors, families, boaters & crop circle enthusiasts. Expect a lively, eclectic pub that attracts visitors from far and wide; fascinating characters, live music, camping, great food and drink, friendly staff and lots of laughs. There is nowhere quite like it!
There is a campsite behind the pub which we are hoping to keep open all year round.
Meals are served daily and as a free house there is a good selection of beers and cider.
Bands every Saturday and most Fridays with impromptu sessions on a regular basis.
